Library Buff-Up

If you haven’t already wandered down the hall to see the transformation it’s time to pop your head in the door and look at the Library!  This winter the Christian Development Committee has changed the once cold and not necessarily most inviting place to read a book, into a cozy retreat room.  By adding two comfortable reading chairs, a soft carpet underfoot and a fireplace for instant heat, the room has become much more welcoming.  Of course the Stewards have to be thanked for their generosity in refinishing the floor while they were updating the music room.  The table and meeting chairs remain if research work requires table top assistance with the leaves stored in the corner for larger meeting use. The fireplace not only has the remote control but you can adjust the temperature and fan.

Lots of new books have been added in the last few years. Next up is cataloguing and organizing the shelves back to the wonderful condition Terry McClintock had them in in years past. We are in search of a new librarian to maintain the library going forward. Let the CD Committee know if this interests you!

With this update we hope to see the library use rise in many respects.  It is now a wonderful room for reading, small meetings and quiet reflection.

ENJOY! - Cathy Lago, Chair-CD Committee

A "Love Grows Here" Logo

Picture
Chances are, if you have received an email from the church lately, that you have encountered the St. Stephen’s on-the-Hill “Love Grows Here” logo.  The logo is the work of Marilyn Fourie who developed during our 50th anniversary year.

Trees are a significant sign of life in the world around us.  For years trees have provided shelter, food and fuel for many of God’s creatures.  The Lorne Park community that surrounds St. Stephen’s on-the-Hill is full of some beautiful old trees.

The tree is a symbol of Biblical proportions.  The image of the “Tree of Life” is one that resonates in the opening verses of the book of Genesis and the closing verses of Revelation.  More than thirty different kinds of trees are named in the Bible: In addition to the majestic Cedars of Lebanon extolled in the Old Testament as building material for Solomon's Temple, there are also the Olive Tree and Fig Tree emphasized in the New Testament.

"They are like trees"

Psalm One verses 1-3
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
   or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
   planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
